John Lennon: Artist first, Musician Second

John Lennon is widely known as the member of the revolutionary band, The Beatles as well as for his post Beatles solo work (plus with the plastic ono band). He was much more of an artist than a musician or a guitar player or a vocalist. A perfect example of using art as the vehicle of expression here we present some of the most memorable tunes by John Lennon. (Celebrating what would have become his 80th birthday)

  1. Mother

This is one of the most haunting and personal song by john lennon.

Children, don’t do
What I have done
I couldn’t walk
And I tried to run
I just got to tell you

2. Woman

This was another personal song by john lennon for his wife Yoko.

I know you understand
The little child inside the man
Please remember my life is in your hands

3. Beautiful Boy

John wrote this song for his second Sean. After being a terrible father to his first son, Julian this was his way of redeeming himself.

Before you cross the street,
Take my hand,
Life is what happens to you,
While you’re busy making other plans

another verse:

Out on the ocean sailing away,
I can hardly wait
To see you to come of age,
But I guess we’ll both
Just have to be patient

(Sadly he was killed when his son was 4 and he could never see his son come of age)

4. Give peace a chance

This has to be one of the most iconic peace anthems.

Ev’rybody’s talking ’bout
John and Yoko, Timmy Leary, Rosemary, Tommy Smothers, Bobby Dylan, Tommy Cooper
Derek Taylor, Norman Mailer, Alan Ginsberg, Hare Krishna, Hare, Hare KrishnaAll we are saying is give peace a chance

5. Imagine

You, you may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will be as one
